European Territorial Co-operation – INTERREG

Programme Description

The Interreg Programme is part of the European Union’s structural and investment policy. The programme funds cross-border cooperation between regions and cities. Interreg is realised within three key areas (so-called strands).

  • Cross-border cooperation (A): advancing economic and social cooperation in adjacent border regions
  • Transnational cooperation (B): promoting collaboration between national, regional and local partners in transnational programme areas in order to increase territorial integration of these areas.
  • Interregional cooperation (C): promoting cooperation networks and exchange of experience  in order to improve the efficiency of existing regional development and cohesion instruments.

INTERREG V A Upper Rhine (2014 – 2020)

The programme funds cross-border initiatives that aim at implementing the twelve Specific Objectives defined in the Operational Programme. There are three specific objectives that are relevant for research and innovation in the field of health:

  • Specific Objective 1: Expansion of the cross-border research capacities for research and innovation excellence in the Upper Rhine region.
  • Specific Objective 2: Increased participation of companies in cross-border research and innovation projects with research and higher education institutions.
  • Specific Objective 3: Increase of applications and innovations developed by transnational consortia from the Upper Rhine region.

Further information is available here.

Notes on INTERREG V Upper Rhine

The programme is funded by the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRD).

Funding in the INTERREG V Upper Rhine programme is based on the principle of co-funding of eligible project costs. Up to 50% of the project costs are covered by EFRD funds.

The project partners fund 50% of their eligible project costs. Public institutions usually fund their costs by staff that is not funded from third party funds.

Applicants should contact the financial department (Drittmittelverwaltung) and the EU-Liaison Officer well in advance of any planned submission of pre-proposals.

General information about the implementation of projects funded by INTERREG V Upper Rhine is available here.

Specific information relating to the eligibility of project costs is available here.

The reimbursement of eligible project costs depends on the implementation of the project outputs and the defined output indicators.
