Clinician Scientists

Clinical research needs outstanding clinicians who in addition to their patient-care duties are active in research. Day-to-day patient care leaves young clinicians with little time to work on their own research projects. Thus the Faculty of Medicine launched the Berta-Ottenstein-Program for Clinician Scientists in 2016.

The structured qualification program provides optimal conditions for combining scientific and clinical careers. Over the course of the three-year program, participants conduct a research project in parallel with their medical specialty training. Throughout this time they are supported by mentors. Within the framework of EQUIP, they take part in further scientific and medical training courses, as well as soft skills courses.

Target group

The program is open to clinicians from all fields of medicine. The call for applications for Track l and Track ll is directed at clinicians who are ideally between their sixth and 36th month of medical speciality training. If the first medical speciality training has already been completed, a specialisation in a focus area or a second medical speciality training should have been started. Ideally, dentists should already be practising for six months prior to the start of the program. Furthermore, applicants should have a clinical connection within the Medical Centre of the University of Freiburg by the start of the program (applies also to returnees from abroad or external applicants).
