German Research Foundation (DFG)

The DFG awards the best researchers with funding and, at the same time, gives them the means and freedom necessary for successful research.

One of the DFG's key objectives is the advancement of early career researchers. It therefore offers them programmes which provide appropriate support at every phase of their qualification. The DFG is especially committed to the early independence of researchers and supports the recruitment of talented scientists and academics from at home and abroad for German research.

Note on deadlines: An elan user account must be applied for at least 2 weeks before the submission deadline. Submissions without a valid account will not be considered!

Current calls

Germany’s Excellence Strategy

The Excellence Strategy consists of two funding lines:

  1. Clusters of excellence for the project-based funding of internationally competitive fields of research in universities and university networks; and
  2. Universities of excellence to strengthen universities as institutions and university networks in the long term and further develop their leading international role on the basis of successful clusters of excellence.

The DFG is responsible for the development and implementation of the programme in the Clusters of Excellence funding line. Each year,  approximately €385 million is allocated to this funding line.

With the successful application of two excellence clusters 'CIBSS - Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies" and "livMatS – Living, Adaptive and Energy-autonomous Materials Systems", the University of Freiburg was able to secure a total of € 100 million in research funds over the next 7 years for the fields of biological signalling research and novel, bioinspired materials systems, commencing on 1st January 2019. The DFG press release dating 29 September 2017 can be found here.

A successful application to the Clusters of Excellence funding line is a prerequisite for application to the Universities of Excellence funding line. Universities must have attained funding for at least two Clusters (or a minimum of three Clusters for university consortia) to compete in the Universities of Excellence funding line. Unfortunately, the University's application entitled "Connecting Creative Minds - Trinational, European, Global" was not approved in 2019.
