Medicine

An average of 320 future doctors complete their studies in Freiburg every year - that makes us one of Germany’s biggest medical teaching faculties. Freiburg graduates of Medicine are considered to be among the best in their field in Germany. This success is based on training which focuses on the patient and which is largely conducted in small groups.

In order to prepare our students comprehensively for the demands of working as a doctor, we provide competency-based learning.  Four important strands run through our study programs from beginning to end, supported by special classes:

  • We train our students in communication skills
  • We promote inter-professional cooperation
  • We teach practical skills
  • We teach academic responsibility.

The six-year medical degree is divided into two phases. The scientific foundations of medicine and the basics of scientific method are taught in the first four semesters. Along with the theory of anatomy, students learn key examination techniques in practical courses.   The second phase of studies comprises six semesters with intensive practical courses in nearly all clinical subjects as well as an internship year.

To prepare our students for the global labor market we offer the opportunity to gather one or two semesters of international experience. We maintain exchange programs with universities across Europe, in the United States, Asia, and Australia.
