in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery to be filled by 1 April 2022.

The chosen candidate will represent the field of cardiac surgery in research and teaching and will serve as director of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Heart Center Freiburg - Bad Krozingen. The University Heart Center was integrated into the Medical Center – University of Freiburg on 1 April 2021.

The University Heart Center Freiburg Bad Krozingen has an excellent network of contacts across Germany and a strong international reputation. The new professor in this position will be responsible for further consolidating the University Heart Center’s national and international position. One particular requirement is a high degree of integrative adaptability, allowing to foster and consolidate the incorporation of the University Heart Center into the Medical Center – University of Freiburg is successfully managed. As a prerequisite, a collegial, interdisciplinary and innovative approach for the working attitude as well as in the use of resources across different disciplines and sites is mandatory.

The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery is split between two sites (Freiburg and Bad Krozingen). It performs the full spectrum of cardiac surgical procedures on adults and children (including infant heart transplants). In the field of vascular surgery, the entire spectrum of arterial and venous procedures are carried out.

With the appointment of a new professor to this role, the University Heart Center aims to build on its existing research partnerships within the scope of collaborative funding instruments, including the Collaborative Research Centre 1425 and Freiburg’s CardioVascular BioBank, as well as cooperation within the cardiovascular disciplines and the focus areas of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Freiburg.

Requirements for the appointment are in addition to the compliance with the employment regulations, the completion of a university degree in human medicine, educational qualification, an outstanding dissertation, an excellent publication record and a board certification (Facharztanerkennung) in cardiac surgeon, preferably in vascular surgeon. Applicants should have a Habilitation or an equivalent qualification (§ 47 Landeshochschulgesetz, LHG).

The position is tenured according to § 50 para 1 LHG.

Full Professorship (W 3) for internal medicine with a speciality in cardiology

(to succed Prof. Dr. Christoph Bode)


in the Department of Cardiology and Angiology to be filled by 1 April 2022.

The chosen candidate will represent the field of internal medicine with a speciality in cardiology in research and teaching and will serve as director of the Department of Cardiology and Angiology at the University Heart Center Freiburg - Bad Krozingen. The University Heart Center was integrated into the Medical Center – University of Freiburg on 1 April 2021.

The University Heart Center Freiburg Bad Krozingen has an excellent network of contacts across Germany and a strong international reputation. The new professor in this position will be responsible for further consolidating the University Heart Center’s national and international position. One particular requirement is a high degree of adaptability, allowing the chosen candidate to integrate into the Center in their role as a leader, as well as the ability to drive integration and ensure that the currently separate Departments of Cardiology and Angiology I and II at the Freiburg and Bad Krozingen sites are successfully merged into a single department. Candidates must demonstrate a collegial, interdisciplinary and innovative approach to their work, including in the use of resources across different disciplines and sites.

In terms of clinical experience, they must be confident leaders with a mastery of the entire breadth of cardiology, although the University Heart Center specialises in particular in interventional measures. The newly appointed professor should also be able to confidently treat complex coronary lesions and complicated structural heart disease. They should uphold the University Heart Center’s focus on interventional cardiology and its role as a centre of reference for this field in the state of Baden-Württemberg and in large parts of Germany.

Candidates should also be able to demonstrate outstanding work in basic medical research.

The future holder of this position aims to build on existing research partnerships within the scope of collaborative funding instruments, including the Collaborative Research Centre 1425 (ScarCare), as well as cooperation within the cardiovascular disciplines and the focus areas of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Freiburg.

Full Professorship (W 3) for Clinical Infectious Diseases

(Succession of Prof. Winfried Kern)

in the Department of Medicine II (specialties: gastroenterology, hepatology, endocrinology, and infectious diseases) at the Medical Center-University of Freiburg to be filled by April 1st, 2021.

The future holder of this position will represent the field of Clinical Infectious Diseases in research and teaching. She/he will be the head of the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine II.

The division is responsible for the medical care of adult in- and outpatients with complex infectious and tropical diseases, runs an infectious diseases consultation service, coordinates and organizes hospital-wide interdisciplinary antimicrobial stewardship activities, and offers special outpatient clinics incl. for tropical diseases, travel medicine, vaccination, and refugee/migrant health. A close cooperation with the pediatric infectious disease division, the center for chronic immune deficiency, and the institutes of the center for microbiology, virology and hygiene is existing.

We look for a person with leadership skills, outstanding scientific qualifications and profound clinical competencies in all fields of clinical infectious diseases. The future holder of this position should actively engage in shaping the strategic development of the Freiburg Center for Infection, be involved in and initiate interdisciplinary cooperative research incl. innovative clinical studies.

Professorship for Cardiothoracic Imaging

in the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg to be filled as soon as possible.

The future holder of this position will represent the radiological field of Cardiothoracic Imaging in research and teaching and take responsibility for all cardiothoracic service of the Department at the University Heart Center Freiburg - Bad Krozingen and the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.

The future holder of this position will take the lead of the Division of Cardiothoracic Imaging. This includes also the close collaboration with all adjacent Departments and Clinics at the University Heart Center Freiburg - Bad Krozingen and the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. Establishment of a visible scientific program in the field of Cardiothoracic Imaging with implementation in existing research structures such as the German National Cohort is mandatory.

Junior Professorship for Virtual Implantology

Junior Professorship for Virtual Implantology

in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Regional Plastic Surgery, Division Translational Implantology of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg to be filled as soon as possible. This is a grade W 1-professorship to which performance payments can be offered.

This professorship is suitable for highly qualified early career researchers.

The junior professorship is intended to strengthen the digitization of dental implantology in clinical care, teaching and research. The job holder should develop and expand the interdisciplinary clinical application of the digital workflow in implantology in collaboration with the Departments of the Center for Dental Medicine. The job holder should have knowledge in the interface area between Oral- and Maxillofacial Surgery and Prosthetics and have implant-surgical training.

The research focus lies in the field of virtual anatomical data collection, in-depth knowledge of the methods for optical image data analysis as well as the utilization of three-dimensional anatomical image data are desired. Collaborations with the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology - Medical Physics and the Fraunhofer Ernst-Mach-Institut (EMI) Freiburg already exist and are to be intensified within the framework of the professorship.

Prerequisites for the employment are a university degree in dental medicine, an outstanding dissertation and an excellent publication record in international peer-reviewed journals with a focus on digital implantology. International experience in patient-care and clinical studies are requested.

This position is a fixed term of four years. After a successful interim evaluation, it can be extended by two years.

The future holder of this position will represent the field of Digitalisation in Medicine in research and teaching. She/he will be the medical director of a new Institute for Digitalisation in Medicine (IDIM) at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg. We await research activities to improve quality assurance in medicine and teaching activities promoting innovative methods of knowledge sharing. To achieve these goals, internal resources and expertise should be connected.

Tenure-Track Professorship for signalling mechanisms of adhesion and invasion

The University of Freiburg has been granted 12 Tenure-Track Professorships from the Tenure-Track-Programme and now invites applications in the context of this programme for the

Tenure-Track Professorship for

signalling mechanisms of cell adhesion and invasion

at the Faculty of Medicine in the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, Division I.

This is a grade W1-professorship to which performance payments can be offered. It is to be filled as soon as possible.

This professorship is also suitable for highly qualified early career researchers.

The main research area should be in tumor cell biology and molecular pharmacology. The professorship shall strengthen the research profile of the Faculty of Medicine in tumor and cell biology with a focus on signal integration and regulation. Of central importance shall be mechanotransduction and signalling mechanisms in tumor heterogeneity as well as interactions with the tumor microenvironment. Development and establishment of 3D cell culture models combined with live cell microscopy is desirable. Active participation in teaching in the field pharmacology is a prerequisite. Strong cooperations with the Departments of Medicine, the Institute for Molecular Medicine and Cell Research as well as the Cluster of Excellence CIBSS (Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies) is expected.  

Prerequisites for the employment are a university degree in Medicine, Biochemistry or Biology or similar subjects, an outstanding dissertation and an excellent publication record.

This position is a fixed term of four years. After a successful interim evaluation, it can be extended by two years. Furthermore, the tenure procedure towards Full Professorship W 3 will be initiated after successful interim evaluation.

The tenure procedures are regulated in the Statutes and Quality Assurance Concept for Junior Professorships and Tenure Track Professorships and agreed upon with the Ministry of Science (https://www.zuv.uni-freiburg.de/service/tenure). As a prerequisite for granting tenure and the subsequent conversion into a full professorship (W 3) (1) the requirements defined in the Statutes and Quality Assurance Concept have to be met and (2) the subject specific criteria determined by the Faculty of Medicine have to be met.

Tenure-Track Professorship for Precision Targeting of Signalling

at the Faculty of Medicine in the Department of Medicine I (Specialities: Hematology, Oncology, and Stem-Cell Transplantation).

This is a grade W1-professorship to which performance payments can be offered. It is to be filled as soon as possible. This professorship is also suitable for highly qualified early career researchers.

The applicant needs to prove basic science qualification in the field of "Precision targeting of signalling" with a focus on tumor immunology and immune regulation. A methods premise is the expertise in characterization of immune and tumor cells with metabolic or transcriptional analyses on a single cell level.

The professorship shall support the CRC "Control of Cell Motility in Morphogenesis, Cancer Invasion and Metastasis" which will be followed by a new CRC initiative, the Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies (CIBSS) and the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg (CCCF). In the light of a personalized medicine approach, the professorship is supposed to develop new immunotherapy approaches that can be translated into a clinical application.

Prerequisites for the employment are a university degree in natural sciences or medicine, an outstanding dissertation and an excellent publication record.

This position is a fixed term of four years. After a successful interim evaluation, it can be extended by two years. Furthermore, the tenure procedure towards Full Professorship W 3 will be initiated after successful interim evaluation.

The professorship is dedicated to research and teaching in the field of Medical Physics with focus on Medical Imaging in particular Magnetic Resonance (MR). Candidates will be expected to develop research programs within the research emphasis of the Faculty of Medicine for technological and methodological developments of MR and their application in basic science, preclinical, translational, and clinical science as well as clinical applications.

In addition, new approaches in Computational Imaging are part of the research profile. Key areas of applications are neurology and neuroscience, oncology, and cardiovascular applications.

Candidates are expected to present an excellent track record in pertinent field research with a wide scientific focus and especially demonstrate successful accomplishments in translation of the scientific and technical developments into clinical practice. The ideal candidates are expected to pursue highly innovative imaging research projects at the frontiers of radiologic science and should demonstrate their ability to successfully raise extramural funding. The candidates should furthermore have experience in scientific leadership of large projects. Broad international network, industrial collaborations in the area of MR technology and applications, and experience in IP affairs are of advantage.

This professorship is also suitable for highly qualified early career researchers.

The appointee will represent the area of tumorimmunology in teaching and research. By performing basic and translational research the appointee will contribute to the profile formation of  the Department of General and Visceral Surgery. The research will concentrate on all aspects of the pathogenesis of colorectal carcinoma with a special focus on the role of the microbiome on tumorgenesis and metastasis and its immunological control function. The research focus will be the investigation of the human gut flora by modern NGS techniques. The teaching activities involve tumor immunology and intestinal inflammation. Furthermore we expect long-term experience in tumor immunology, a documented track-record in third-party funding and contribution to current and future joint research projects as well as the initiation of new research projects including research associations.

Prerequisites for the employment are a university degree in medicine and/or molecular medicine, an outstanding dissertation and an excellent publication record.
