The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Freiburg and the Cochrane Germany Foundation (CDS) invites applications for a

Cochrane Professorship (W 3) for Evidence in Medicine

as soon as possible.

The future holder of the position will represent the subject in research and teaching and will be the director of the Institute for Evidence in Medicine (for Cochrane Germany Foundation). The appointment for the Professorship follows the “Berliner Modell”. Furthermore the appointee will be the scientific director of the CDS and board member. A research focus on systematic reviews, methods of evidence based medicine and grading of evidence for clinical recommendations is expected.

Applicants must have extensive knowledge of and experience within The Cochrane Collaboration, including:

  • Authorship or co-authorship of one or more Cochrane Systematic Reviews;
  • Leadership of or significant involvement in one or more of Cochrane’s 120 Groups or Central Executive Team Departments; and, preferably
  • Involvement in Cochrane’s Group Executives, Governing Board or other organization-wide governance, advisory or executive bodies. 

The professorships will be established by the Faculty of medicine in support of the Excellence Strategy.

Requirements for the appointment are in addition to the compliance with the employment regulations, the completion of a university degree in medicine, educational qualification and an exceptional doctorate degree. Applicants should have a Habilitation or an equivalent qualification (§ 47 Landeshochschulgesetz (LHG)).

 Full Professorship (W3) for Oto-Rhino-Laryngology

(Succession of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Roland Laszig)

to be as soon as possible.

The future holder of this position will represent the subject in research and teaching. She/he will be the medical director of the department of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology at the medical center – University of Freiburg. A section cochlear Implant (Implant Centrum Freiburg, ICF) is part of the department. The Freiburg Institute for Musicians' Medicine is in charge of patient with phoniatrics spectrum.

The successful candidate must have longstanding clinical experience in the complete field of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology. Applicants are expected to be experienced in personnel and clinical management, as well as clinical economics. Excellent, internationally recognized scientific credentials, allocation of third-party research funding and teaching abilities are required for this position.

Furthermore a close, interdisciplinary cooperation, an active role in the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg – CCCF, and the Integration into the main research activities of the faculty of medicine, is expected.

to be filled as soon as possible. The future holder of the position represents the subject in research and teaching. We are looking for a personality who, in particular, coordinates and strengthens the existing “Lehr- und Forschungspraxennetz“ and works in a close collobaration with the “Lehrbeauftragten für Allgemeinmedizin“ as well as the facilities of the Medical Center – University of Freiburg and the faculty of medicine. Due to the high importance in student training, excellent didactic competence as well as profound experience with different teaching and learning formats is required.

Possible research areas are in the field of health care research or teaching research. Collaboration and coordination of research activities with other scientist in Freiburg is expected.

Full Professorship (W 3) for Medical Bioinformatics

as soon as possible.

The future holder of the position will represent the field of Medical Bioinformatics in research and teaching. The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Freiburg strives to advance the integration and analysis of large datasets originating from research and clinical care to obtain novel scientific insights and to promote personalized medicine.

The Medical Center-University of Freiburg and the Faculty of Medicine intend to found a new Institute for Medical Bioinformatics, which the future holder of the Professorship for Medical Bioinformatics will direct, in the context of a reorganization of the Department for Medical Biometry and Medical Informatics.

The successful applicant should be an internationally renown expert, with a scientific track record in translational medicine as evidenced by publications in leading journals in the area of medical bioinformatics/systems medicine and experience with the analysis of diverse patient data.

A focus of Professorship of Medical Bioinformatics is the development of novel methods, integration and analysis of high-dimensional, molecular and/or imaging datasets originating from research and clinical care in the core areas of the Faculty of Medicine (Epigenetics/Functional Genetics, Immunology/Infectious Diseases, Molecular Cell Research/Regenerative Medicine, Neurosciences, Oncology/Functional Imaging).

Functions of the Professorship include provision of scientific service and scientific training for the Faculty of Medicine in the above-mentioned areas; interdisciplinary cooperativeness is an important prerequisite. Collaborations with other Faculties (e. g., the Technical Faculty) and external research partners are expected in the context of coordinated research centres, German Centres for Health Research, as well as other joint research projects.

The professorships will be established by the Faculty of medicine in support of the Excellence Strategy.

Prerequisites for the employment of the Professorship are, in addition to the general requirements under public services law, a university degree (for example in medicine, (bio- informatics or mathematics) a dissertation and a Habilitation, or qualifications equivalent with a Habilitation according to the German academic system, as well as pedagogical suitability. The future holder of the position should have teaching experience in the area of Medical Bioinformatics. The receipt of peer-reviewed and competitively awarded grants/third party funds is a requirement. Experience in the direction of a research group or a division will be positively considered.

in the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology to be filled by October 1th, 2018.

The future holder of the position will represent the field in research and teaching. She/he is in charge of the Division I of the Institute. We search for a candidate with excellent national and international reputation, who will support and further strengthen research topics in the Institute and key research areas of the Medical Faculty, including epigenetics and functional genetics, molecular cell research and regenerative medicine, immunology and infectiology, neurosciences, oncology and functional imaging. Both departments at the institute will jointly perform the teaching required for human medicine, dentistry, molecular medicine, pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences and nursing sciences. Applicants should have a proven record in teaching all fields of pharmacology and toxicology.

This professorship is expected to strengthen the excellence strategy in the area biological signaling research.

Full Professorship (W 3) for functional and translational Proteome Research

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Freiburg invites applications for a

Full Professorship (W 3) for functional and translational Proteome Research

in the Institute of Surgical Pathology to be filled as soon as possible.

The future holder of this position will represent the field of functional and translational Proteome Research in research and teaching.

This professorship will closely collaborate with the Deutsche Konsortium für Translationale Krebsforschung (DKTK) at the partner site Freiburg focussing on basic science and translational research. With this position, the Faculty of Medicine aims to strengthen, the focus area “Oncology and Functional Imaging”. Furthermore, the applicant is expected to integrate in the interdisciplinary networks of the Collaborative Research Center 850 “Control of Cell Mobility in Morphogenesis, Cancer Invasion and Metastasis”, the Center of Biological Studies (BIOSS) and the Life Sciences research of the University. A close collaboration with the Institut für Molekulare Medizin und Zellforschung is intended to support translational research. An additional goal will be the establishment and quality control of proteomic analyses in pathological diagnostics.

This professorship is particularly suitable as a starting position for highly qualified early career researchers.

Requirements for the appointment are in addition to the compliance with the employment regulations, the completion of an university degree in medicine or sciences, educational qualification and an exceptional doctorate degree. Applicants should have a Habilitation or an equivalent qualification (§ 47 Landeshochschulgesetz (LHG)).

The Professorship will be set up as part of the Heisenberg-Program of the German Research Foundation (DFG). It is therefore a prerequisite for the establishment and filling of the professorship that a grant for a Heisenberg-Professorship submitted by the applicant is granted by the DFG.

In line with the standards of the DFG, the position is initially limited to a 5 year W 3-Professorship according to § 50 paragraph 2 Landeshochschulgesetz (LHG) and can be converted into a tenured W 3-Professorship according to § 48 paragraph 1 (LHG) if receiving a positive evaluation. In case the employment is to be continued after the initial period, a new appeals procedure is not required.

Full Professorship (W3) for Anatomy with a focus on Experimental Neuroregeneration (Heisenberg-Professorship)

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Freiburg invites applications for a

Full Professorship (W3) for Anatomy with a focus on Experimental Neuroregeneration

(Heisenberg-Professorship)

in the Institute of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Department Molecular Embryology to be filled as soon as possible. The professorship will represent the field of anatomy with a focus on experimental neuroregeneration in research and teaching.

The professorship is to establish and maintain an internationally recognized research agenda linking the fields of neurovascular disease and stem cell biology. With this position, the Faculty of Medicine aims to strengthen the focus area “Neuroinflammation” (SFB/TRR Initiative NeuroMac: “Development, function and potential of myeloid cells in central nervous system”).

With regard to the increasingly important role of stem cell biology and hematology for the development of novel therapeutic approaches for neurovascular diseases successful candidates are expected to develop novel pre-clinical models for investigating the molecular mechanisms of neurovascular diseases in terms of signalling pathways and transcriptional programs. Candidates with a profound expertise in animal models of neurodegenerative diseases, vascular biology and stem cell biology will be given preference.

Both departments at the institute of Anatomy and Cell Biology will jointly perform the teaching in anatomy required for human medicine, dentistry, and molecular medicine. Applicants should have a proven record in teaching all fields of anatomy.

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Freiburg invites applications for a

 Full Professorship (W 3) for Allergology and Immunodermatology

(Succession of Prof. Thilo Jakob)

to be filled as soon as possible.

The position involves research, teaching of medical students and residents as well as patient care and clinical services as a staff member of the Department of Dermatology. The successful candidate is expected to develop an internationally competitive research program in the field of molecular and cellular mechanisms of autoinflammation, autoimmunity and/or allergy that strengthens the research area “immunology and infectiology” of the Faculty of Medicine. Collaboration and coordination of research activities with other scientists in Freiburg, in particular with the excellence cluster Biological Signaling Systems (BIOSS), the Center for Chronic Immunodeficiency (CCI) and the Collaborative Research Centers is expected.

Prerequisites for the employment of professors are an MD degree, an outstanding dissertation, an excellent scientific track record, ability to acquire substantial external funding, and a board certification in dermatology. Substantial achievements and experience in academic research and teaching at the level of a Habilitation according to the German academic system are expected.

The position is tenured according to § 50 para 1 Landeshochschulgesetz (LHG).

The Faculty of Medicine of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg announces the opening of the following position at the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy, Center for Mental Disorders of the University Medical Center Freiburg

W 3 Endowed Professorship for Systemic Family Therapy

The holder of the position represents the area of Systemic Family Therapy in Research and Teaching. With the professorship, family therapy should be further developed as research focus.

Extensive experience in the work with families and family therapy, in Treatment, Education, Training, and in Research is required for the position. Expertise in Psychotherapy in general as well as  Psychotherapy Research is appreciated.

We are looking for an internationally acclaimed researcher, who is capable of developing and advancing the existing clinical, scientific and didactic focus of psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy.

Particular emphasis will be placed on experience with international collaborations. The solicitation of third-party funds and experience in leading scientific work groups are a prerequisite. Requirements for employment are completed studies in Psychology, Medicine, or related fields of study, as well as postdoctoral lecture qualification (Habilitation) or a comparable scientific accomplishment. Proof of pedagogical qualification should be provided.

The Endowed Professorship is initially appointed for a period of ten years according to § 50 para 2 LHG. The employment is as a Professor on salary. An evaluation will follow after eight years and will determine the basis of the continuation of the professorship.

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Freiburg invites applications for a

Full Professorship (W 3) for Neuronal Function and Dysfunction

at the Department of Neurology and Clinical Neuroscience to be filled as soon as possible. The future holder of the position will represent the subject in research and teaching. Main focus of research defined by the Faculty of Medicine, are activities particularly in the fields of neuroscience and functional neuro-imaging as well as a close collaboration with the cluster of excellence BrainLinks-BrainTools are preferable. A personality combining mathematical, biometrical and IT-related skills with a profound understanding of neurological diseases is being looked for. Freiburg’s University Medical Center provides almost ideal conditions for this field of research with large and soundly distinguished groups of patients (e.g. stroke, attentiveness and motor disorders) as well as parallel setups.

In addition to the general conditions required by the employment law for civil servants and government employees, prerequisites for the employment of Professors are a university degree, e.g. in human medicine and pedagogic aptitude. Substantial achievements and experience in academic research and teaching, at the level of a Habilitation according to the German academic system (§ 47 Landeshochschulgesetz (LHG)), are expected.

Candidates with further neurological qualifications may participate in clinical tasks. Proof of competence in interdisciplinary cooperation will be expected. An internationally visible research track record and the acquisition of third-party funding as well as experience in the management of a scientific workgroup are required.

The position is initially limited to a 5 year W 3-Professorship according to § 50 paragraph 2 of the State Law for Higher Education (Landeshochschulgesetz, LHG) and can be converted into a tenured Professorship according to § 48 paragraph 1 (LHG). In case the employment is to be continued after the initial period, a new appeals procedure is not required.

 Full Professorship (W3) for Research in Surgical Oncology

in the Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the University Hospital in Freiburg (director: Prof. Dr. Stefan Fichtner-Feigl) as soon as possible. The chair holder will represent the subject of experimental and translational surgical oncology in research and teaching.

The position is tenured according to § 50 para 1 Landeshochschulgesetz (LHG). Applicants must have a graduate degree in human medicine or natural sciences, an academic doctotral degree, a Habilitation according to the German academic system or equivalent achievements, and longstanding experience in oncological research. Furthermore, applicants are characterized by international research projects, ought to have an international record of previous allocation of third-party funding and publications  in international scientific journals . A crucial focus of the position is on translational research. Active participation and collaboration with local research facilities and current projects (SFB, DKTK, CCCF) is presupposed. Willingness to interdisciplinary collaboration as well as experience in leading and management characterize the applicant as well.   It is desirable that applicants show strong commitment to teaching and very good didactic skills in the field of experimental and translational surgical oncology. This position is particularly suitable for eligible highly qualified junior scientists.

 Full Professorship (W 3) for Regenerative Pharmacology

in the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology to be filled as soon as possible.

This professorship is particularly suitable as a starting position for highly qualified early career researchers.

The position will carry responsibility in both research and teaching. The professorship shall identify the molecular mechanisms of development and disease in order to translate knowledge from stem cell biology into therapeutic applications and regenerative pharmacology. The candidate is expected to strengthen the research activities in the institute in the field of cardiovascular epigenetics and to cooperate with fields of life sciences at the Faculty of Medicine and at the University.

Prerequisites for the employment of Professors are a university degree in medicine, an outstanding dissertation and an excellent publication record. Substantial achievements and experience in academic research and teaching, at the level of a Habilitation according to the German academic system, are expected.

The Professorship will be set up as part of the Heisenberg-Program of the German Research Foundation (DFG). It is therefore a prerequisite for the establishment and filling of the professorship that a grant for a Heisenberg-Professorship submitted by the applicant is granted by the DFG.

In line with the standards of the DFG, the position is initially limited to a 5 year W 3-Professorship according to § 50 paragraph 2 of the State Law for Higher Education (Landeshochschulgesetz, LHG) and can be converted into a tenured W 3-Professorship according to § 48 paragraph 1 (LHG) if receiving a positive evaluation. The future holder of the position will be the medical director of the Department of Neurosurgery, Neurocenter, at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg. The Division of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery is part of the Department of Neurosurgery.

The candidate must have longstanding clinical experience in the complete field of general neurosurgery. Applicants are expected to be experienced in personnel and clinical management, as well as clinical oeconomics. Excellent, internationally recognized scientific credentials, allocation of third-party research funding and teaching abilities are required for this position.

A close cooperation with the constituting departments and institutes within the Neurocenter as well as with the cooperating partners is expected. Integration into the research projects of the faculty of medicine, especially in oncology, neuroscience and into the excellence cluster BrainLinks/BrainTools is equally expected.

Junior Professorship (W 1) for Neuroimmunology

at the Institute of Neuropathology in the Department Neurocentre to be filled by as soon as possible.

This professorship is particularly suitable as a starting position for highly qualified early career researchers.

The candidate is expected to strengthen the research activities in the institute on basic science research in the field of neuroimmunology. Autoimmune, infectious and neurodegenerative diseases and their interplay with the immune system are a special focus. The pathogenic role of glial cells for CNS disorders is another topic of major interest. A close cooperation with the the German Research Council (DFG) founded research group FOR1336 “From monocytes to brain macrophages – conditions influencing the fate of myeloid cells in the brain” or its follow up initiatives and to local research activities in the field of life sciences at the University is desirable.

Prerequisites for the employment of Junior Professors are a university degree in medicine, biology, molecular medicine or similar, an outstanding dissertation and an excellent publication record.

This position is a fixed term of four years. After a successful interim evaluation, it can be extended by two years.

Full Professorship (W 3) for Paediatric Surgery

in the Department of General and Visceral Surgery (Medical Director Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Ulrich Hopt). 

The position is available immediately. The chair entails representing the field in both research and teaching as well as assuming responsibilities in the area of patient care.  

The chair is tenured according to § 50 para. 1 Federal State University Law (Landeshochschulgesetz) and is to be held in compliance with the employment regulations of the University Hospital Freiburg.

The candidate must have longstanding clinical experience and possess outstanding clinical qualifications in the field of paediatric surgery.  An accredited specialization in paediatric surgery as well as a habilitation or equivalent achievements are prerequisite. The applicant should also dispose of the readiness to cooperate on an interdisciplinary level in addition to having leadership experience and management capabilities. Collaboration with existing research groups along with special engagement in teaching and very good didactic skills in the field of paediatric surgery are desirable. The readiness to actively promote the education and continuing education of students and doctors is mandatory. 

Following the construction of the new Children’s Hospital (start of construction 2017/2018), the Paediatric Surgery Department will be relocated in this independent facility. Alongside the core spectrum of General and Visceral Surgery, the orientation of Paediatric Surgery will be geared to the focal areas of the professional who receives/occupies this chair.

An der Medizinischen Fakultät der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg ist in der Klinik für Neurochirurgie die

W 3-Professur für Neuroonkologie

zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt zu besetzen.

Mit dieser Professur soll der Forschungsschwerpunkt Neuroonkologie gestärkt werden. Der Stelleninhaber/die Stelleninhaberin vertritt das Fach Neuroonkologie in Forschung und Lehre. Die Professur soll in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Deutschen Konsortium für Translatio­nale Krebsforschung (DKTK) am Partnerstandort Freiburg mit einer grundlagen- und patien­tenorientierten For­schung zur weiteren Profilbildung der Forschungsschwerpunkte der Medi­zinischen Fakultät Epigenetik und Funktionelle Genetik sowie Onkologie und Funktionelles Imaging beitragen. Eine enge Vernetzung und Kooperation mit dem Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg (CCCF), dem SFB 992 Medi­zinische Epigenetik und dem SFB 850 Kontrolle der Zellmotilität bei Morphogenese, Tumorinvasion und Metastasierung sind erwünscht. Gesucht wird eine herausragende Forscherpersönlichkeit mit international anerkannten Leistungen in dem skizzierten Forschungsfeld. Einwerbungen von begutachteten Drittmitteln und Erfahrung in der Führung einer wissenschaftlichen Arbeitsgruppe sind erwünscht.

Die Professur soll im Beamtenverhältnis auf Dauer gemäß § 50 Abs. 1 LHG eingerichtet werden.

Einstellungsvoraussetzungen sind ein abgeschlossenes Hochschulstudium der Medizin oder Naturwissenschaften und die Habilitation bzw. gleichwertige wissenschaftliche Leistungen auf dem Gebiet der molekularen und translationalen Onkologie, außerdem didaktische Eig­nung.

W 3-Professur für Physiologie

zu besetzen. Die Stelleninhaberin/ der Stelleninhaber vertritt das Fach Physiologie in Forschung und Lehre; mit der Professur ist die Leitung der Abteilung I des Physiologischen Instituts verbunden.

Gesucht wird eine Persönlichkeit mit international ausgewiesener wissenschaftlicher Reputation. Der/die gesuchte Wissenschaftler/in muss sich durch herausragende Forschungsleistungen insbesondere auf dem Gebiet der Neurowissenschaften auszeichnen und soll die bisherige Arbeitsrichtung des Instituts komplementieren. Erwartet wird auch die intensive Mitwirkung an einem der bestehenden Sonderforschungsbereiche (SFB 746, 620, 850, 592) oder Exzellenzcluster (‚BIOSS - Centre for Biological Signalling Studies‘, ‚BrainLinks-BrainTools’) sowie an der Weiterentwicklung und Stärkung vor allem des neurowissenschaftlichen Forschungsschwerpunktes an der Medizinischen Fakultät.

Einstellungsvoraussetzungen sind ein abgeschlossenes Hochschulstudium, die Habilitation oder vergleichbare wissenschaftliche Leistungen, sowie mehrjährige Erfahrung in der Leitung einer wissenschaftlichen Arbeitsgruppe, der kompetitiven Drittmitteleinwerbung und der Betreuung von Doktoranden. Erwartet werden ferner Erfahrung in allen Bereichen der Lehre des Faches 'Physiologie', Kooperationsfähigkeit sowie Engagement in der akademischen Selbstverwaltung.

W 3-Stiftungsprofessur für Selbsthilfeforschung mit Schwerpunkt Krebs-Selbsthilfe

An der Medizinischen Fakultät der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg ist am Tumorzentrum Freiburg, Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg – CCCF – eine

W 3-Stiftungsprofessur für Selbsthilfeforschung mit Schwerpunkt Krebs-Selbsthilfe

zu besetzen.

Durch die Stiftungsprofessur sollen die Forschung und Lehre zur Selbsthilfe - insbesondere zur Arbeitsweise, den Leistungen und der Wirksamkeit der Krebs-Selbsthilfe, der Vernetzung mit der onkologischen Versorgungsforschung und den sie tragenden Institutionen/Kliniken, der Erforschung des Beitrags der Krebs-Selbsthilfe zu patientennahen Outcomes wie Lebensqualität und Partizipation der Erkrankten am gesellschaftlichen Leben, sowie die Verankerung der Erkenntnisse zur Krebs-Selbsthilfe in der akademischen Lehre – gefördert werden.

Einstellungsvoraussetzungen sind ein abgeschlossenes Studium der Psychologie, Humanmedizin oder verwandter Studiengänge sowie die Habilitation oder gleichwertige wissenschaftliche Leistungen. International anerkannte Leistungen im Bereich der Selbsthilfeforschung werden erwartet. Lehrkompetenz und umfangreiche Erfahrungen in der Lehre werden vorausgesetzt.

Die Professur wird als Stiftungsprofessur der Deutschen Krebshilfe als W 3-Stelle eingerichtet. Die Stelle ist gem. § 50 Abs. 2 LHG zunächst auf fünf Jahre befristet und wird nach positiver Evaluation – insbesondere unter Würdigung der wissenschaftlichen Profilierung des Bereichs - in eine unbefristete W 3-Professur umgewandelt, ohne dass es eines erneuten Berufungsverfahrens bedarf. Die Anstellung erfolgt als Professorin/Professor im Angestelltenverhältnis.
