Research

Research is particularly innovative and successful when it is conducted jointly between disciplines. Working by this principle, scientists at the University of Freiburg Faculty of Medicine combine multidisciplinary knowledge from basic research with findings from clinical research in order to develop new treatments and to translate them into better patient care.

With innovative approaches and excellent researchers, the Faculty of Medicine is a leader in its fields of research. This is reinforced by annual third-party funding of more than 76 million euros and top-ranking positions in the German Research Foundation’s Funding Atlas. Particularly in the area of collaborative research centers and transregional collaborative research centers, and by working within two excellence clusters, Freiburg’s medical researchers make important contributions to medical advances. Core research areas here are molecular cell research and regenerative medicine, immunology and infectiology, epigenetics and functional genetics, oncology and functional imaging, and the neurosciences.

In order to advance our research, the Faculty of Medicine aims to attract the best medical minds to Freiburg. We promote junior researchers with structured excellence programs, research training groups, and a variety of further training measures. The Spemann Graduate School of Biology and Medicine plays a valuable role in this; the School has been funded as part of the Excellence Initiative since 2006.  Researchers from around the world are given scope to develop their ideas at the multi-faculty Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (Frias). In addition the Faculty of Medicine works closely with the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg and is a partner location in the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK).
